The Ultimate Guide to Fantage Filming
By Bluerivers

Fantage Filming

So you might think you know everything you need to know about fantage filming. Think again. Did you know there are over 2,000 fantage videos on YouTube and other places, such as Google Videos, etc.? There are over 100 made and uploaded every day. Over 1,000,000 people have viewed the videos (individuals). If you want your videos to be well-directed, scripted, acted, and produced, follow this guide and it'll happen in no time.

What's Your Type of Film?
There are three basic kinds of films that fantage filmers go by. They are:

  • Series are frequently mixed up with movies. Series have 5+ episodes under 7 minutes (per season) , whereas movies have under ten episodes that each have over 10 minutes on them. Series are the most common fantage films made, as they don't take much time (per episode) and they attract a lot of attention. However, making a topic for each character for each episode can take up a lot of time off the computer, and it also takes up a lot of brainstorming. I don't reccommend making a series unless you already have your script and everything all planned out beforehand.
  • Movies are a bit more time consuming than series are, but they're done in pretty much one shot. Movies only have one topic, not several, and they can be easily 40 minutes to one hour long. They are much easier to make in hindsight, but finding actors and actresses is a pain.
  • Short Videos seem to get the least attention from Fantagians. They get boring very fast, contrary to popular belief and if you're going to be a fantagian comedian, take REAL like lessons and watch lots of comedies because it's very very hard to accomplish. If you want to take this path, make sure you know what you're doing. If you do, everything will be fine.

Once you've chosen what kind of filming you want to do, here are the requirements you'll need to be familiar with if you want to be successful...

Series:

Movie:

Short Videos:

Short Videos may look like the least amount of work, but to keep people hooked you may have to repeat those steps at least three times a week.

What Audience Do You Want To Attract?

You need a target audience in order to get a good amount of viewers. Needless to say, fantage is played by 3 year olds - 14 year olds (that I know of, maybe older). 3-7 year olds most likely don't watch YouTube movies, so that leaves 8-14 year olds, a six year age range. Keep in mind that the internet DOES let people mature faster. You do not need to sugar coat everything you make. It won't bring you many viewers, either.

  • 8-9 Year Olds probably shouldn't watch too sexual (teenage pregnancy) or gothic, dark, murderous films. Who knows? They might want to, but to be on the safe side, put discretion in your films if they contain anything over PG.
  • 10-12 Year Olds can get up a little higher in this level. They can definitely watch things that explain a little bit, like a decent love story, but not much above what 8-9 year olds should watch. Keep this PG-13, but definitely nothing above.
  • 13-14 Year Olds can watch anything. They're the easiest audience to hit in that respect but you need something that keeps them interested and watching. If you want to do a crime drama, you can do it. You can also use anything over PG-13 and between R. If you are going to use anything close to R, rate your movie that so people know what they're watching and so viewer discretion is advised correctly.

If you want to know what you're limited to in each age group, click here. When you know what audience you want to attract, it's time to pick the topic(s) you want to cover in your series, videos, or movie.

Cool. I've got to get back into Fantage and do something like this! or maybe I'll do it on witchme. Even cooler since I don't have to worry about "boards" getting in the way of making it seem real.
